The Altar Speaks Part 4 – The Altar of Victory

In Genesis 17:15 Moses built an altar and called the name of it Jehovah-nissi or The Lord is our Banner!  At this altar we find victory, strength, and the knowledge that we are more than conquerors through Christ who gives us the victory!

Israel was fighting Amalek at Rephidim.  Moses stood upon the top of the mountain with Aaron and Hur while Joshua was in the valley fighting with the army of Israel against the forces of evil.  Moses held up the rod of God with Aaron on each side of him helping him to hold up his hands during the battle.  When his hands dropped down Amalek would begin to win.  At this altar we see and image of Christ  on the cross with two malefactors on either side of Him.  Moses, Aron and Hur.  As long as the cross is exalted we win the battle.  Any time that it is not, we lose.

This is what is meant by Jehovah-nissi.   Our banner, our flag, our rallying point.  Our flesh is weak, but our spirit is willing.  The battle is not ours, it is His.  We are not fighting against flesh and blood, but against powers, principalities, the rulers of the darkness of this world, and against wickedness in high places.  As the Lord said, “It is not by might, nor by power, but by my Spirit saith he Lord.”

At this altar we find strength to stand and to withstand.  At this altar we learn to take on the whole armor of God.  At this altar we learn to be strong in the power of His might. At this altar we come to know that there is no weapon formed against us that shall prosper. That every conversation spoken against us the Lord shall condemn.  That our righteousness if not of ourselves, but of God!
